With this JDF coast guard commander Hat comes great responsibility.

Two weeks ago I took my first trip to the Jamaica Defence Force  coast guard base of operations for an assignment for the paper. This visit I was under instructions to capture some images to accompany a story on the first female commander  in history of the JDF coast guard. the obvious images were the interview images while she was responding to the reporter for a sense of dialog. Next was something to tie her to the “Commander” post that she know holds. I tried a few images in front of the ships, on one of the ships in the commander chair of the ship but nothing felt right.. and just as we were leaving i looked over my shoulder while she and the reporter conversed and realised that I was too close the entire time. I framed her in the middle surrounded by all the vessels docked in the background which made a way more interesting photo in my humble opinion.   Now here are two out takes that I made while she was doing her interview.. I liked the gesture the symmetry and how beautiful the hat...

On Assignment: Tropical Storm no wait thats Hurricane Sandy

The Media house I work for take their Weather Systems and Election coverage really seriously I tell ya. I was up from about 5:00am and ready at 5:30 for 6:00Am Pick up as we all needed to rendezvous at work to get the ball rolling as early as possible. I’ll not go into the deets about what happened how it should and what went wrong. lets fast forward to when I hit the streets. I was donning water boots a huge yellow rain cloak under which i kept my d300s with 18-200mm and a 70-200mm f/2.8 all held together by the Black Rapid DR-1 I also brought the 80-400 with me in the event that I needed some extra reach at some point. I was brought my Macbook and my Ideos u8150 which served as my mi-fi device so I could wire images back as soon as i got back in the car (gotta love android built in personal hotspot feature). The whole system worked well, as i was able to successfully do just that. The cool factor about the overcast conditions yesterday was it enabled me to shoot manual exposure without really paying much attention to light changes because.. frankly there was non it was pretty much the same constant stream of light so it was a set it and forget it vibe until later in the day when the darkness began to creep in so I’ld open up aperture or bump iso or even drop shutter speed as low as I could for hand held usage. My area assigned to cover was St. Andrew and the idea is hit up the trouble spots in your assigned area and outside of that just rove and keep an keen eye out for anything interesting. I ended up visiting kintyre where the hope river typically floods the bridge marooning the community members on each side until the raging water subsides. The next interesting place I visited was the Palisadoes strip which is always a troubled area as the road would always be flooded and impassible. However with the 64 million dollar project to construct a new road which should stand up to weather conditions such as this everyone was interested to see how it would hold up. Even though the construction wasn’t completed the palisadoes strip seemed to really hold its ground. there was just one section where the waves made its way under the rocks and was pulling some of the sand back with it as it receded to the ocean. The wind on the strip were really serious. When I opened the car door it was as if...

Recording Artiste Estelle

its one of those nothing goes right saturdays. where you had one assignment and then that quickly turned into three. you race to get to the assignment and it turns out to be a complete waste of time. its an annoying and frustrating day; but then a phone call comes in and the topic is international recording artiste Estelle who’s in jamaica for a few days for a performance at Pulse Jamaica’s Caribbean Fashion Week 2012. We need some photos of estelle for the outlook do you think you’ll be able to make that assignment. uhhhhh YESSS!!!!!! I wasn’t prepared for the photoshoot but these things happen and you just gotta make the best of what you got which was my sb 28 a lightstand and a really tattered umbrella *how embarrasing*. Anyway I raced to tuff gong studio’s which is where the she was doing her soundcheck for her performance at caribbean fashion week later that evening. I had about 15 minutes to get some images while she was being interviewed by a reporter. Her manager kinda made me feel a bit uncomfortable but he was just doing his job.. they were on a really tight schedule it seemed. she got interviewed I did my thing. My first impression of her is “she’s pretty normal”. I like that in a celeb. when you can speak to em and feel completely comfortable. I know its spilt milk but i reallly wish i had the appropriate gear and a little more time to crank out some solid work with her. That was a great portfolio opportunity that I didn’t get to maximize...

I’ll leave you with some thumbs from sting which i did on December the 26th 2009 Location: Jamworld Portmore. on the business side of things I’ve been doing alot of thinking and have some ideas for change for my photography business. Change interms of Equipment, Business Practices and ethics as well as What I Primarily shoot. On another note I have an interview with a newspaper company tomorrow. Contemplating shooting for the paper now if its a Viable option for an extra income while doing some I love and enjoy. Other benefits would be lots of exposure to different kind of events. and just becoming experienced and seasoned in location based photography as typically photojournalist Have to go shoot something or someone instead of it coming to them right. Till my next Blog. Keep up with me on a daily basis on twitter...
