Some love from the Stella Maris Dance Ensemble

I’ve been a bad blogger, I’ve been tardy with my posts and I’m honestly trying to address it. This is more of a check in so to speak as compared to my usual updates. Restaurant week is a few days away so the round up is over for the most part, what seems to be left is the build up events which are more of a social nature which isn’t really my forte of assignments. However in poker we bluff and play the hand we’ve been dealt. About a week ago I was invited to the Stella Maris Dance Ensemble 20th anniversary award ceremony by Souad Lawrence (founder). I had a late assignment but I still managed to make it to the ceremony which was held at the  Stella Maris pastoral center. I missed the cocktails and mingle but got there just in time for a tribute to Monika Lawrence (founder) by the SMDE dancers after which they dived directly into the awards. They thanked various organizations and individuals (internal and external) for their support over the years me being one of them for photography services at the annual Stella Maris Dance Ensemble dance performance at the little theatre. I’m still sporting my camera and ID card as I came directly from work, u can tell I rarely get on the other side of a viewfinder. Here’s a jog down memory lane of previous SDME performances at the little theatre for your viewing delight. Stella Maris Dance Ensemble  2011 performance and Stella Maris Dance Ensemble  2012 Performance.  The 2013 show is roughly a week away, I urge you to go be amazed by they art of story telling through dance. They are a talented bunch you will not be...

Achievement Unlocked: Press Association of Jamaica Award for news photography

Well the title says it all. but the leading up to it is kinda interesting. when it was nearing the deadline to enter the PAJ awards this year i was just not feeling it. “there are way too many seasoned veterans for me a 2-3 year old photojournalist to compete with”. That was the main thought in my mind. At the end of the day though I was convinced to enter, I did pay my PAJ annual dues so why the hell not right. So I entered my two images. The winning news entry and another for a human interest entry. I didn’t find out I was a nominee till the evening before the awards. When I saw the names i was up against i figured yea thats a done deal its, that guy or that guy (seasoned Veterans, not old guys just years of experience, well known and respected photojournalist’s). Now Friday the day of the award was a fairly busy day, Had to go to linstead to get the car from my dad for A boxing assignment for Getty Images on saturday, Had work, had errands and had a job for another client at 4pm. Based on my schedule I figured PAJ awards is scrapped I aint winning anything anyway. I’ll finish up my job that starts at 4 then head home. At about 8pm i started getting some calls from A Co-worker saying you should really come, make every effort to come. I was saying yea I’ll try but i really didn’t intend to. but a couple calls later from the same Bredrin and a text or two from another and I figured you know what it cant hurt lets shower and drive up to the pegasus n see whats what. I didn’t even have a jacket to wear (I’m not so big on formal attire). I drove up and my Co-Worker was outside waiting saying what took ya so long man. He lent me his jacket to head in to the awards, I had a seat and greeted the people next to me and less than 10 seconds later i Heard and the award for the Ashton Rhoden award for news photography goes to Gladstone Taylor. now despite hearing people saying I think you won from earlier in the day, I’m a huge sceptic I’ve never won anything in my life So I’m quite elated. I’m happy I went. I’m grateful for my Co-worker for being on my case about getting there. The Gleaner Company Really cleaned up this year taking a total of 12 awards (see the story here) Thanks to Rudolph Brown for...

Rjr 2010 sportman & sportswoman of the year

One of my projects from january 2010. For this particular event I was shooting backup for an agency “IMGwire”. The lead photographer, and ceo of IMGwire “giovanni powell” had sent video and still images of the venue via blackberry to me from midday of the 14th of january. This gave me an idea of seating arrangements. Lighting arrangements and where may be in accessible or where ild want to be to get my required images. Based on the lighting conditions it was clear that I needed my glass to be f2/8 or faster. So I took the 50mm F1.8 and 28 – 75mm f2/8 which severd quit well. The camera bodies used for this assignment was the eos 30d and IMGwires eos 1D MKIII. The images from the event came out pretty good. as a preview, in the image to the left we have the sportswoman of 2009 Bridget Foster, The rest of the images are available in my portfolio for viewing go check em...
