The dancers are really talented and the choreographers did an excellent job. This is the first time i’m shooting the show with nikon equipment. as the last time i was shooting with a 30D.

This year i took the d7000, a Giottos monopod and Monfrotto ballhead a total of 20GB of SD storage and a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC. Got there at 4:30 PM which was 30 minutes before show time. Found my spot front row dead center and talked a bit with two other photographers that were there until it was show time.

When i began shooting i decided I wanted to go for a lot of motion this time. and not just freeze the frame which is extremely easy now that my High Iso capabilities are really up there with the d7000 in comparison to the 30D where I dared not past 400 or 800 if I”m desperate. it was like i was in a symphony as my fingers rolled the shutter dial and aperture dials where necessary to slow the shutter and compensate for the long exposure with a smaller aperture to induce motion in the frames. I was successful with what I wanted so I moved on to just shooting the show with some freeze frames of the dancers. Here are a few of the photos and the rest can be seen in my portfolio here

I really enjoyed shooting this and I’ll definitely be making some prints from these will probably give one as a gift to a friend of mine that got me into this type of photography.

I came accross a magazine a little while back. They’re called Camerapixo.

Firstly I liked it then looking at a few more issues I liked it a lot. then i was like okay lets look at these suckers.. and i realized whoaa its Freeeeee!!!!! thats right FREE!!! done in pdf format so its totally ready for tablet consumption which is practically how i read anything in this day and age, dead tree’s are done for (tree’s everywhere rejoice). Anyway I invite you to check them out. Start from issue one. its all in the archives.

So ye check em out, I dont get paid to write this stuff , not that i’d mind (you hear that camerapixo!! :wink wink:) but irrespective. Its Free, its good content its PDF so you can read it on your ipad, iphone android or whatever you choose and did i mention its frikken Free! Check em out!.

I take photos on a daily basis with my iPhone 4 and 3GS before than and when i tell people i did that with my iPhone they tell me i’m joking.

My personal Applications of choice for my iPhone photo needs are Instagram, Camera+ and the basic camera on the iPhone 4, and on the post processing side of things, I typically just use camera+ and for somethings Photoshop Express. I’ve dabbled around with Photogene but have never needed that much features as it provides. (overkill imho)

This photo above I did with my iPhone 3GS at the time post work was done in Photoshop express (blur, black and white conversion and border) and i used actual Photoshop on pc to add the gallery print border. tell me what you think of the output in the comments below, also do you think you still need a point and shoot with the advancement of image quality on todays cellphones.??

I had fun -_- photographing hand bags and shoes (dont laugh) but it goes to show you can have fun photographing whatever… yknow as long as you find a way to actively engage your mind or challenge your self. I wasn’t informed of the assignment so i didn’t really have any plans to do any off camera lighting but luckily i always have my triggers and i happened to have a softlighter in the car. There were 2 reporters with me 1 male 1 female. the male automatically became the Voice Activated Lightstand and he did an excellent job.

The Shot

We have a pair of Jessica Simpson um… footwear (i’m not sure what to call em they aint rly heels, not pumps not sandals) but ye footwear along with matching Jessica Simpson Handbag. Dont ask me the price female reader… i seriously didn’t check (bout 15k gets you both i think. I kid i kid or do I*glare*).

The Setup

I’m using a two light setup and essentially turned it into a 3 light setup. found a very interesting little spot in the store (totally commandeered the check out counter lol) the counter top was a reflective surface kinda looked like marble but i’m not sure. and then the backdrop was a leather like wall with button holes.. I’m like that will look rly cool with some specular highlights. so i setup a sb 900 to light the background and provide separation light.now the cool thing is the wall was in an L shape so to speak and as a result.. when the light traveled across some would kick back to the right side of the show providing a little edge light (effectively being a third light source). and then when that was all set i brought in the main light, an sb 28dx modified with a softlighter positioned over head. feathered so as to not light the marble surface just the shoe and bag. And there you have it.

You may have noticed I didn’t qoute any shutter speeds and any aperature or anything like that because the truth is it wasn’t what was important. what was important is being unprepared and still being able to make something work. The image was used in the Flair Magazine in a center spread along with other shots from the same assignment.

P.s you know whats really cool about ignite. Its right beside a awesome coffee shop that I’ll spend my last dollar on called Rituals Cafe.. the coffee is really good. Try it some time. (I don’t get paid to say this, I don’t get free coffee I’m just sharing an awesome brew source).

I’m in the studio with shari. Shar has been doing some serious gym training and wanted some photos to show her progress. Of her features I think the beat were her legs her butt and her tummy. I focused on the legs and tummy though. The othe area is for another photoshoot.

This shoot was done in like an hour. And the images were awesome, it was fast it was efficient and it was effective. M it would have been done faster if I didn’t do the first two concepts in jpg and have to reshoot in raw -_-’. barring that little hiccup it was perfect.

Post work there was pretty much non. Other than black and white conversion, sharpening, curves and level adjustments. There was zero retouching, all effects were done in camera as far as I wanted the image to look. I’ll share my favorite photo from this shoot. Shari definitely has a sexy tummy don’t you think?

Months later it’s materializing and before I know it she’s in my studio with a friend of hers who she wanted to come with as she was nervous. I had @linkinmchenry as my assistant for the shoot.

I had used the moodboard app for iPad to layout the different looks we were going for and strobox to produce my lighting diagrams so the shoot went like clock work.

Creativity started kicking in as the shoot went on n I came up with my original concepts on spot. The big thing about them were it was all natural light which is kind of not my style but I have been doing it alot lately and loving the results.

We were in the studio for a couple hours and made some amazing images I’m gonna post a few of my favorites, they’re already on my @500px account if you wanna just jump there.

I’ld be photographing Two of the Digicel Jamaica brand ambassadors, Tifa and I-Octane. I thought I’ld share one of the photos from the shoot and a quick n dirty run down of how it was done.

Two light setup. Main light left about 3 feet, modified by an umbrella to light the subject. Second light bare off to the left maybe 8 feet, directed at the Flag. Looking back at it i should have either gridded or snooted to control that light some more so as to not light outside of the flag area.

In all honesty I cant remember my flash power and shutter speed’s etc at the moment, So i hope you guys aren’t “measurebators”, who revel in the technical and cant see the art in anything.

In regards to the posing of the subject this one was actually suggested by the reporter that accompanied me for the assignment. This is why ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls; it is EXTREMELY important to listen, never think your too good to learn from someone irrespective of them being in your field or not. because quite frankly I really liked the feel of this image compared to the other ones that were all done by me, While most wouldn’t admit it I feel no shame in doing so.

Anyway I’m off to my next assignment, so until next time.

The model’s name was Nekoda Diedrick and the image above speaks for it self i’m certain even on day two everybody was buzzing about her strut down the black cat walk. I whipped out my ipad with a few images of her that i had imported the previous night n i was attacked lol. anyway. just a quick in betweener blog entry on the happenings thus far.
