An old assignment. I had fun -_- photographing hand bags and shoes (dont laugh) but it goes to show you can have fun photographing whatever… yknow as long as you find a way to actively engage your mind or challenge your self. I wasn’t informed of the assignment so i didn’t really have any plans to do any off camera lighting but luckily i always have my triggers and i happened to have a softlighter in the car. There were 2 reporters with me 1 male 1 female. the male automatically became the Voice Activated Lightstand and he did an excellent job.

The Shot

We have a pair of Jessica Simpson um… footwear (i’m not sure what to call em they aint rly heels, not pumps not sandals) but ye footwear along with matching Jessica Simpson Handbag. Dont ask me the price female reader… i seriously didn’t check (bout 15k gets you both i think. I kid i kid or do I*glare*).

The Setup

I’m using a two light setup and essentially turned it into a 3 light setup. found a very interesting little spot in the store (totally commandeered the check out counter lol) the counter top was a reflective surface kinda looked like marble but i’m not sure. and then the backdrop was a leather like wall with button holes.. I’m like that will look rly cool with some specular highlights. so i setup a sb 900 to light the background and provide separation light.now the cool thing is the wall was in an L shape so to speak and as a result.. when the light traveled across some would kick back to the right side of the show providing a little edge light (effectively being a third light source). and then when that was all set i brought in the main light, an sb 28dx modified with a softlighter positioned over head. feathered so as to not light the marble surface just the shoe and bag. And there you have it.

You may have noticed I didn’t qoute any shutter speeds and any aperature or anything like that because the truth is it wasn’t what was important. what was important is being unprepared and still being able to make something work. The image was used in the Flair Magazine in a center spread along with other shots from the same assignment.

P.s you know whats really cool about ignite. Its right beside a awesome coffee shop that I’ll spend my last dollar on called Rituals Cafe.. the coffee is really good. Try it some time. (I don’t get paid to say this, I don’t get free coffee I’m just sharing an awesome brew source).

About a week or two ago, I got an assignment I was looking forward to do. I’ld be photographing Two of the Digicel Jamaica brand …

About a week or two ago, I got an assignment I was looking forward to do. I’ld be photographing Two of the Digicel Jamaica brand ambassadors, Tifa and I-Octane. I thought I’ld share one of the photos from the shoot and a quick n dirty run down of how it was done.

Two light setup. Main light left about 3 feet, modified by an umbrella to light the subject. Second light bare off to the left maybe 8 feet, directed at the Flag. Looking back at it i should have either gridded or snooted to control that light some more so as to not light outside of the flag area.

In all honesty I cant remember my flash power and shutter speed’s etc at the moment, So i hope you guys aren’t “measurebators”, who revel in the technical and cant see the art in anything.

In regards to the posing of the subject this one was actually suggested by the reporter that accompanied me for the assignment. This is why ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls; it is EXTREMELY important to listen, never think your too good to learn from someone irrespective of them being in your field or not. because quite frankly I really liked the feel of this image compared to the other ones that were all done by me, While most wouldn’t admit it I feel no shame in doing so.

Anyway I’m off to my next assignment, so until next time.

May 5, 2011. A saturday, An interesting day it was for me Was photographing a wedding for @icuucme that i worked alongside for a couple years as a web developer @jamaicagleaner. The blessed event was to take place strauncastle “beautiful place btw”. On the assist I had @linkinmchenry on the assist with lighting and shooting backup he didn’t do too bad, but needs more practice on shooting backup n being focus on whats happening. anyway on to the go parts.

We arrived on location on time (12:30) and was waaayyyy early lol for “wedding standard” but thats how i wanted it to be so i could go scope out the location and get some ideas for formals I had gone through the facebook page for straun castle and threw some images on my mood board for possible locations already but i figured why not get a first hand look. After rounding that stuff up i proceeded to do some details shots, (confetti bags, favors, bouquets and so on) shortly after that I had to leave the venue which is in stony hill btw and head back to manor park to pick up a 580EXII from @9970000 “seriously tnx dude”.

Got to manor park and returned to straun castle in like half an hour n then proceeded to take preparation photos of the bride, groom, and a managed to nail a few of the grooms men formals out the way. At any one point in time my strobist setup was a maximum of two lights to minimize running around from strobe to strobe. after that it was more prep shots of the bride n the parents popping in on the bride the tears, the excitement the works

I was there from 12:30 – 10pm it was a long day, was really tired from standing so long and from running around the various locations in straun castle for the formals The image above is one of my fav photos for the day.

This assignment was kinda a jewel that i just stumbled into and i definitely had a looooot of fun doing it Got to go through the Garage if i was more of a grease monkey I’ld probably have gone ape $hit crazy. the point of the assignment was really about a bmw automotive school that stewart motors are opening buuuuut the cool part of it was I needed to photograph Mrs Dian Stewart A director of Stewart motors I kinda started out by planning out the concepts i could probably go with using moodboard lite after doing that there was an interview where i had a ball shooting ambient with the 50mm 1.8 lighting was kinda nice to play around with.

then finally it was off to the show room for the lead image for the feature which is the lead image for this blog entry . A portrait of Mrs Stewart. I went with a 2 light setup, softliter as main light and bare sb900 in su4 as rim / hair light. catch the full feature on the jamaica-gleaner

The location was an office setting which thou small I absolutely loved. The problem is the subject wasn’t dressed in cover photo wear so to speak. So I did the images I wanted to do just invade a reshoot wasn’t possible before the deadline later in the week. If was luckily able to re-shoot the subject the following day though, however this time I had to do it at the gleaner company and that day not many locations were at my disposal. Eventually i was able to get a board meeting room to use for 15 minutes which was more than enough time to do what i had in my head was a one lit image. Hd the subject kinda leaove a chair, Filled the frame with the subject, she got her game face on, 1 light cam left 1/4 pwr and presto. To put it out there i couldn’t have done it so easily had the subject Mrs Thompson not been so easy to photograph all in all a good days work in good time . Which kinda led me to my next assignment.

Oh one key thing i kind of left out is, on the first shoot in the office location, on getting there my cybersync trigger battery was completely zapped. of course its not standard batteries so i ended up using the sb900 in su4 mode stopped the flash exposure in camera down to -1 to compensate from the on camera flash that’ll be triggering the sb900 the results from those are what was actually used for the feature. see image number 2 in the image slider.

Sloop shortly after tha cover shoot I had to run scarf some food and drive up to my next assignment, all I knew is i was shooting some fashion, not who nor where, in transit to the assignment the reporter made me aware I
Would be photographing Michelle Downer, lovingly and popularly know as D’angel. I wasn’t really nervous because I had photographed her before aaggges ago anyway that shoot sucked as I sucked a lot more then than i do now. I wanted to make a statement with these images as best as I could with the limited time i would probably have with the artiste as I had previously learned on a photoshoot with bet 106 and parks host, Roxie .
Luckily time wasn’t a big issue for reason i cant explain as i have signed a non disclosure agreement. Anywhoo there where 8 looks total and I had the ability to use anywhere I wanted to at the location. Mostly I had a 1 light setup as i didn’t take much with me cause i didn’t now who i was photographing but I did make the best of it. I used the sb900 in su4 as my kicker light in a few shots that i wanted that effect here’s my favorite image from the set. My reason for liking this image is the Contrast in theme A juxtaposition of her attire and location. enjoy and see the rest of the images and article in the Flair Magazine Online

As I had mentioned in the last post , I had a follow up to do with the client. I should have posted this ages ago but the holidays had me supremely busy with work for the Newspaper, Stush as well as My own business. anywho here we go.

The location was Morgans harbor yet again Followed by the palisadoes strip ( a little spot that i picked out on the way to morgans harbor that i wanted to use for some twilight imagery with the couple). On this assignment I had some help from Don Giovanni of IMGwire sadly not much help as he had his own business to attend to. I got about an hour of assistance from him which i used to do as much off the off camera stuff I need to do. then after he left I pretty much winged it with 1 speedlight as it was kinda windy and I was afraid of smashing my lights. for the 2 light setups that i did use i went with hard lights to eliminate the wind as a problem. All in all the assignment went smoothly could have been smoother If i had sandbags or an assistant for the entire session but I’ve learnt to not complain and to just make the situation work Here’s a composite of some images from the session, enjoy.

First thing no its not a donkey. Second It was fun Third props to @jamaicapegasus and @susiesbakery Third… ok I got nothing else.

The photoshoot was set to begin at 5:00pm to work with the Twilight into the night however @roamingdonkeyja Also known as Monique Powell was late so I had to alter my concepts a bit. which worked out fine anyway. The first location was @jamaicapegasus. The roof (top of the world) was perfect for what I had in mind.I found that i needed a stepladder to achieve a shot concept I really wanted but had to work around and come to a creative / cool looking compromise.@linkinmchenry was my trusty VAL.

We were using a 2 light setup for the most part 3 where needed (third added for fill). It was lots of laughter n goofing around but make no mistake we handled our business. @roamingdonkeyja was really happy with the results and I’m sure surprised her self by how cool the photos looked as she thought she wasn’t photogenic. fOR The shot I’m featuring in this post.

I had her close to the railing kinda comfortably leaning over there as you can see. had the photek softligher modifying an sb28 at about 1/4 power held overhead. at first that was the plan but i didn’t like how her hair / locks got gobbled up by the darkness as the light quickly fell off. So i grabbed an sb900 and another cybersync trigger ran all the way to the other end of the top of the world *lol* setup a lightstand and gelled the sb900 with a full CTO threw some light against the wall for separation and a warm look to balance off the white light I’m throwing on @roamingdonkey. The overall look She was most happy with . That was our last shot on the top of the world we then made haste to our second location @susiesbakery wher we did 3 quick shots got it right and had some amaaaaazing coffee n called it a night.

Great Shoot, Great Times. Next week wednesday I’ll be blogging about Erica’s Boudoir Photoshoot Stay tuned.

and another weekend of couples deeply in love. Today we were working with Rochelle and Horace. Location: Hellshire, Assistant: @linkinmchenry and his friend Brian (dunno his twitter handle).

The original idea i had for this day was to shoot in a cave I had visited once however I had no idea how to find it so we improvised with another location I knew of. We had to park and trek through bushes and over some serious rocks but it wasn’t that bad.

We didn’t waste much time after arriving at the location as the weather didn’t seem like it’ll hold out for much longer. @linkinmchenry was my key light controller and brian the fill and some times kicker.

Setting for the main light didn’t change from 1/4 power at all. The presence of those clouds kinda kept the ambient diffused and fairly constant for the time we were out there.

@linkinmchenry kinda pitched in some artistic direction which I tweaked a bit.

Let’s break Down the shot that I’m showing you guys.

Here we have Horace in the foreground as the main subject, and Rochelle goofing off in the background the softliter was the only lightsource illuminating Horace and a sb900 in su4 mode at 1/16th was used to light Rochelle in the background. It all came together nicely though.
