On Assignment: 2013 Grace Jackson Track and Field Meet

Location: National Stadium, Kingston, Jamaica Event: 2013 Grace Jackson Meet The images were all shot in Color, however they felt more impactful in black and white. The inspiration came from a post I saw on David Hobby’s Google+ page a few weeks ago. *thats right people actually use google+* Here’s a bit of behind the scenes images so to speak on my Google+...

On Assingment: Walker Cup Football Match

making progress with remote shooting for football. there are still a few things that are odd for me though.. first is the exposure. its kinda tricky setting the exposure because well the lighting isn’t and can’t be constant AS its not indoor, the sun was in and out of the clouds etc.., shooting at night with the stadium lights would probably work out better because the light at that 1 remote camera spot will be constant all 90 minutes of that football game… The gorilla pod and the giottos mini bullhead was a good idea. lives up to its theoretical and now practical promise. good support with flexible usage and position. The D2h is a tad heavy for it imo but it works and stood up for both 90 minutes and overtime for the matches. “was a looooong day”. my limitations thus far though.. I need something wider than the 18mm that i got. I’ve got a 17mm but its still not that big a difference. I’m thinking Fish eye wide. maybe 10mm. There’s a Rokinon MF that I’m eyeing. its at about USD$300 if not that maybe one of the ultra wide angles from Tokina, Preferably something for FX as I hope to be transitioning from DX soon. Must say the one thing that i know for sure about sports photography its hellla expensive!! I have yet to get my own super Telephoto and thats gonna run me about USD$3000 and up for an entry level minimum to shoot for results that I want. I’ve got access to the Nikon 300mm f/2.8 but sadly not all the time. Its a beautiful lens to use, most of the images in my portfolio are when I’m using that piece of glass, I just really need to acquire my own to ensure that everything I do with regards to sports can have the same output quality and consistency.. #consistency is very important. Maybe i should put the Dreams of FX on hold and focus on the optics...

Remote Camera Setup complete

It’s all finally been put together and seems like it’ll operate great in the field. The gorilla pod gives me the flexibility in providing support in a range of terrains and mounting scenarios. It was for that same reason that I went with the gorilla pod over a standard mounting plate. The pocket wizard plus II gives me good range, more than I’ll need for remotely triggering a camera at least and the giottos mini ballhead gives me the ability to get the camera leveled just how I need it to be. The only thing that I could use is a vertical viewfinder to aid in pre...

On Assigment: Manning Cup Football

Wasn’t my assignment actually my gigs for the day were prettty laid back. one was with a millionaire entrepreneur from the states that came to Jamaica to share his story with anyone that wanted to listen as it seemed like an open to the public event. To stay on topic though I’ll jump to it, the photojournalist that was to cover the manning cup match couldn’t make it and with my new found interest in Sports Photography I didn’t mind picking up the slack there at all, that…. and I wanted to test out a remote camera setup which I’m code naming OmniPresence #Getit It was raining so I made a little rain coat from the Kata rain cover that came with my kata backpack and set the remote camera (D2h + Pocket Wizard Pluss II and the 10 pin connector cable that can be had from Flash Zebra) behind the Goal that i figured would get hammered. I got a few interesting photos but saddddlly the shutter cable wasn’t properly plugged into the wizard so it stopped shooting after a while. (need gaffer tape to affix to ensure nothing like that happens next time). I realized that once i added the second camera it gave me one more thing to think about which kinda screwed with me at first. I guess after i get used to it It’ll be like second nature n i’ll kinda just deal with it like i deal with breathing or blinking. Another thing i figured was, It would be smart to get two same size CF cards and make sure they’re empty before starting a game.. that way i can have an idea of the image count remaining on the remote camera when i look at the image remaning count on the main camera Here’s an outtake from the remote camera D2H @ 18mm of the Dunoon High School Goal Keeper saving a shot at the goal from one of the St. Georges College Strikers. And from the D300s @ 300m And here’s one more for fun.. its a dead photo really as it doesn’t have the ball visible but I kinda liked it...

On Assignment: Jamaica Vs USA World Cup Qualifier Football Match

The Premise The other day I landed a job for Getty Images to shoot the Jamaica vs USA football match which was played locally at the Jamaica National Stadium thanks to the refferals from a few local photographers Londie Murray of the JPA and a few others *thanks guys*. the procedure was. get images of fans. shoot action of the game and then goals as well as crowd reactions to the goals. Ensured I got to the stadium early. I dual weilding that day. a D300s with a Nikon 300mm f4 and Nikon 70-200 f2.8 on a d700. things were going fine at first.. but as the evening light faded and the night set in i realize that f4 just would not be fast enough for these stadium lights. i was all the way up to iso 2000 at some point. after a few shots i figured i gotta switch the 300mm f/4 to the d7000 as it has better noise handling that the d300s and and put the 70-200 f/2.8 on the d300s. While this helped it didn’t help that much. Now Enter the drama. Wiring Images back to Getty Images Its an ftp setup to get the images back. you gotta caption in a specific method they stipulate then upload em to a ftp folder. simple right. well thats PROVIDED YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION DOESN’T DECIDE TO FLIP YOU THE BIRD. there was no internet from the dongle. I had. and the stadium had no wireless access points for media it seems. had to find workarounds and then rush back to the office after and ftp the rest of the images within the 1hr time limit i had post game to deliver. The Exprience Its pretty nerve racking in regards to worrying about the deadlines for which you need to wire images. 15 minutes in the game. then half time then after the game. you find your self missing alot of the action because your consumed with sorting through images to get on the wire. I missed the goal that was scored in the first 40seconds of the game because i was busy trying to wire images back that i took prior to the game starting of the USA fans and so on cheering and so on. What have I learned I’d make my life simpler by bringing a second person to do the ftp transfers for me. secondly I’d use remote camera’s to shoot behind each goal post while i work the four corners of the field. and i’d probably have a third person to intermittently check on the remote camera’s. Also lastly 70-200 2.8 on a...

Jamaica national international invitational

On may the first I was reminded of a very important lesson. That is. With all my assignments that I may get and will get. It is very important to ensure I meet with the client and understand exactly what is required. While I thought the assignment was strictly sports related it was not. It involved a lot of lifestyle photography, showing the patrons and athletes in their elements, it was a fun experience as all assignments should be :), I enjoyed it thoroughly. In terms of gear I was shooting the 30D and lens artillery consisted of the, 70-200mm f/2.8L, 28-75mm f/2.8 and a 85mm f/1.8. Sadly I’m unable to publish any of the images as of yet. So till that happens I guess your stuck with my old mug. Look for a themed concept I’m working on with @vampnixen just a matter of getting the right model for each role. It’ll be fun. More to come on...
