I was having a convo the other day via fb or w/e instant messaging app i was using to talk with fellow photographer @ryanlueclarke. we were talking about the new awesomeness from apple the iPhone 4s and iOS5 anyway the conversation drifted to the inevitable Camera’s but we were talking about the need of a point and shoot or rather the lack for the need of a point and shoot in this day and age. because with the current cellphones on the market you really are able to push the camera’s on those suckers to the limit. coupled with he right applications in my opinion an iPhone completely kills the need for a point and shoot. I take photos on a daily basis with my iPhone 4 and 3GS before than and when i tell people i did that with my iPhone they tell me i’m joking.

My personal Applications of choice for my iPhone photo needs are Instagram, Camera+ and the basic camera on the iPhone 4, and on the post processing side of things, I typically just use camera+ and for somethings Photoshop Express. I’ve dabbled around with Photogene but have never needed that much features as it provides. (overkill imho)

This photo above I did with my iPhone 3GS at the time post work was done in Photoshop express (blur, black and white conversion and border) and i used actual Photoshop on pc to add the gallery print border. tell me what you think of the output in the comments below, also do you think you still need a point and shoot with the advancement of image quality on todays cellphones.??

An old assignment. I had fun -_- photographing hand bags and shoes (dont laugh) but it goes to show you can have fun photographing whatever… …

An old assignment. I had fun -_- photographing hand bags and shoes (dont laugh) but it goes to show you can have fun photographing whatever… yknow as long as you find a way to actively engage your mind or challenge your self. I wasn’t informed of the assignment so i didn’t really have any plans to do any off camera lighting but luckily i always have my triggers and i happened to have a softlighter in the car. There were 2 reporters with me 1 male 1 female. the male automatically became the Voice Activated Lightstand and he did an excellent job.

The Shot

We have a pair of Jessica Simpson um… footwear (i’m not sure what to call em they aint rly heels, not pumps not sandals) but ye footwear along with matching Jessica Simpson Handbag. Dont ask me the price female reader… i seriously didn’t check (bout 15k gets you both i think. I kid i kid or do I*glare*).

The Setup

I’m using a two light setup and essentially turned it into a 3 light setup. found a very interesting little spot in the store (totally commandeered the check out counter lol) the counter top was a reflective surface kinda looked like marble but i’m not sure. and then the backdrop was a leather like wall with button holes.. I’m like that will look rly cool with some specular highlights. so i setup a sb 900 to light the background and provide separation light.now the cool thing is the wall was in an L shape so to speak and as a result.. when the light traveled across some would kick back to the right side of the show providing a little edge light (effectively being a third light source). and then when that was all set i brought in the main light, an sb 28dx modified with a softlighter positioned over head. feathered so as to not light the marble surface just the shoe and bag. And there you have it.

You may have noticed I didn’t qoute any shutter speeds and any aperature or anything like that because the truth is it wasn’t what was important. what was important is being unprepared and still being able to make something work. The image was used in the Flair Magazine in a center spread along with other shots from the same assignment.

P.s you know whats really cool about ignite. Its right beside a awesome coffee shop that I’ll spend my last dollar on called Rituals Cafe.. the coffee is really good. Try it some time. (I don’t get paid to say this, I don’t get free coffee I’m just sharing an awesome brew source).

A week after Christina and Stacey,s shoot. I’m in the studio with shari. Shar has been doing some serious gym training and wanted some photos to show her progress. Of her features I think the beat were her legs her butt and her tummy. I focused on the legs and tummy though. The othe area is for another photoshoot.

This shoot was done in like an hour. And the images were awesome, it was fast it was efficient and it was effective. M it would have been done faster if I didn’t do the first two concepts in jpg and have to reshoot in raw -_-’. barring that little hiccup it was perfect.

Post work there was pretty much non. Other than black and white conversion, sharpening, curves and level adjustments. There was zero retouching, all effects were done in camera as far as I wanted the image to look. I’ll share my favorite photo from this shoot. Shari definitely has a sexy tummy don’t you think?

Early last week I had an assignment to photograph a lovely lady for the cover of the flair magazine. The location was an office setting which thou small I absolutely loved. The problem is the subject wasn’t dressed in cover photo wear so to speak. So I did the images I wanted to do just invade a reshoot wasn’t possible before the deadline later in the week. If was luckily able to re-shoot the subject the following day though, however this time I had to do it at the gleaner company and that day not many locations were at my disposal. Eventually i was able to get a board meeting room to use for 15 minutes which was more than enough time to do what i had in my head was a one lit image. Hd the subject kinda leaove a chair, Filled the frame with the subject, she got her game face on, 1 light cam left 1/4 pwr and presto. To put it out there i couldn’t have done it so easily had the subject Mrs Thompson not been so easy to photograph all in all a good days work in good time . Which kinda led me to my next assignment.

Oh one key thing i kind of left out is, on the first shoot in the office location, on getting there my cybersync trigger battery was completely zapped. of course its not standard batteries so i ended up using the sb900 in su4 mode stopped the flash exposure in camera down to -1 to compensate from the on camera flash that’ll be triggering the sb900 the results from those are what was actually used for the feature. see image number 2 in the image slider.

First off the long weekend the other day was awesome whish there were alot more of those per year. now on towards the point of this post. on sunday of the long weekend october 17, 2010. I had a photoshoot with Micheal and Christina people I actually know from High School days so it was kinda fun getting to see em again. anyway, The location for the shoot was port royale which is kinda far and close to the ocean, The sky wore a menacing facial expression for most the day and it did infact rain just not in port royale (thanks big guy upstairs).

The team for the day was the subjects, Christina and Micheal, @linkinmchenry and @stunnerj and myself (@taylor2nd), On location at port royale I headed to the spot i had in mind for the shoot when she booked me a couple weeks ago. (sadly things had changed and the location was no longer open to the public. It was the abandoned naval hospital which had some really cool spots but i didn’t make it dampen the spirit of the day, quickly took the shoot to the beach found some spots and worked it. @linkinmchenry working the lights, and @stunnerj doing behind the scenes photos and video. We wrapped up in about an hour and was about to head to another location when we saw a brick wall that we had to make use of spent maybe another 15 minutes getting some shots there. then headed for kingston close to a friend of mine who had this interesting industrial blocakade which i saw a few weeks ago and just loved it called him up asked him if its cool if i rolled through with a crew and he was okay with it. Here’s an image shot on the blockade.

How did i light it.

Okay it was really dark at this point. what i did was have the softliter above and infront close camera right. The speedlight was at 1/4 power, and that lit em pretty nicely. then i had another speedlight at full power. far camera right modified by an umbrella throwing some light on the blockade which was pretty much pitch black

Today, I decided, I’m taking 2 lightstands 2 speedlights a beauty dish and a broll, wont get caught without that modifier this time around if i got em all right. The assignment was a jewelry / accessories photoshoot at Chain Reaction [ their stuff is pretty awesome, i'll be visiting next week to go shopping ]. The model model was actually one of the co-owners daughters. She did pretty well.

mostly I worked with a two light setup using the dish and the umbrella as modifiers. for my favorite shot though which i just came up with on a whim (did it more for me than for them to tell the truth), i used one light on the subject modified with the shoot through umbrella at 1/4 power at camera right and the second speedlight bare powered down to 16th power and used it to throw some light at an orange wall behind the subject for some separation color pop.

The holidays are upon us. It is tomorrow.. the pinacle of the season of which it is cool to be jolly. lol. Um The hustle and bustle will heighten to its greatest extent tonight. I think I’m gonna keep in. As a result I pushed forward an image I had envisioned Capturing to an earlier date (yesterday). Hope you enjoy it, feel free to give feedback on it via comments (-_-).

For the next few days I’m really busy, Christmas seems to be the big rest day or tranquility and family time. the 26th, I’m shooting Sting 2009 The biggest stage show in the Caribbean, then the 27th I’m shooting some children, and then the 28th I’m shooting some Portraits for a young lady. will have to give some thought as to what I’m traveling with on the 26th and the 27th.. would love to keep the weight light-ish as I’m not Driving… .

Best of the best for you and yours in the holidays. Have a good one.
