Winter Concept Beauty Shoot

It’s always a pleasure working with such creative and talented individuals that I can also call friends. On Sunday, December 14, 2014, the team took Hope Gardens by storm, with their creativity, teamwork and willingness to try new places and things. I want to say thank you to my models, Terri-Karelle Reid and Davina Laylor who are always troopers and aren’t afraid to be painted silver or thrown in size o jeans. (More of a task than you know when your not a size 0.) To my creative director, Garfene Grandison, whose insight and creativity never ceases to amaze me! He’s always coming up with new ideas and angles to make the final images a work of art. To Jheanelle Walker, a diamond in the rough who prefers to remain hidden, as her work speaks. Her blending and application made for a flawless ice princess. To Mario Smith, who controlled the lighting in both the rain and tunnels we ventured for the days’ shots. The man is a statue! Thank you to Raymond Simpson, who was second lighting assistant and videographer; Khanique McDaniel, third lighting assistant and shoot manager.   A huge shout out also to Monique Simpson and Andre Haynes for the BTS help. I love it when the team grows! It was definitely a team effort and I am nothing without my team and friends. Thank you guys for another stellar shoot! Left to Right: Gladstone Taylor, Raymond Simpson, Davina Laylor, Terri-Karelle Reid, Jheanelle Walker, Garfene Grandison and Khanique...

Making that star trail photograph

Making that star trail photograph

From the first time I saw a star trail photo I was instantly “hypnotized” by its Awesomeness!! not the spirals that are created from the stars due to earths movements but just how amazing the concept was to me at the time. Since then I’ve tried many times but there were always a few issues, “light pollution” being the number one culprit. A few weeks ago while on an Island Gem Feature for the Jamaica Gleaner’s Outlook Magazine I saw the perfect opportunity. Its almost as it was destined. It was the weekend of a new moon meaning there would be no moon which means less light over the long exposure and also there was a beach which for the most part was in complete darkness at night and due to the location of the Jamaica in right by the coast there was no light pollution coming from the open ocean.   Star Trail Trial One I would be spending 3 days and 2 nights at the location so I know I had two chances and no more. The first night I attempted it i successfully made a star trail just not a very good one. The image was extremely grainy due to long exposure noise which apparently comes from the heat generated while the shutter is in its open state doing the long exposure. Here are a few images from the failed attempt. So I returned to my room, reviewed the images an thought there must be a better way, examples of these that i’ve seen were not this noisy. Spent some time online doing some research and decided to give it my all on the last available time to nail the image. Star Trail Trail Two The following night after returning from photographing some baby turtles being hatched I got to my room and grabbed all the equipment I would need and backups just in case. Equipment Used Sturdy Monfrotto Tripod Monfrotto Ballhead D7000 Nikon IR remote for D7000 Backup Equipment D800 Pocket Wizard Plus II (2) Remote Release Cable for Pocket Wizard Now some of you may ask why in the world is he using his D800 as a backup. Simply because the file size from that thing is huge Ideally I wanted to use my D7000 but just brought a backup should one fail. Star Trail Photo Method The method employed for the star trail was different from the previous night, instead of doing one long exposure I went with the stacking method. took approximately 3 minute exposures for maybe an hour and a half which in all honesty is no where near enough to...

The Black and White Highway Project

Over the past week or so I’ve been doing an Instagram photo essay titled the “The black and white highway project”. Its in black and white “duh” and centered around the highway while in transit. I’ve gotten many messages to cut it out from friends that care dearly. Don’t worry guys i’m driving at like 20mph when i’m doing this sometimes I’m not driving at all. I’m not sure how i ended up starting the project but I tried to be consistent with it and just didn’t stop. here are a few of the images.     Feed back is welcomed in the comments. Maybe you could recommend what my next instagram series should be focused on.  ...

Engagement Photo Session at the kingston harbour with Lonnie And Daedrie-Ann

This is actually a throw back blog post that just never got published for some reason. Late December of 2012 I was approached by a couple who wanted an engagement photo session prior to their January wedding. They gave me complete creative control, I was able to choose the Location and time that I’d prefer for the session which I honestly some times prefer. I Scouted a few days earlier and decided I’d use the Kingston Waterfront as I’ve seen some amazing sunrises there. As long as they were on time for 6am, everything should be perfect. Assisting was a friend of mine Mario Smith, he doesn’t shoot but he’s an excellent voice activated light stand *Grin*. Groom was early the bride cut it slightly close but everything fell into place as it should and the shoot was under way. The lighting was kept fairly simple as i tend to do on location. 1 light a relatively large diffuser and a speed light Boomed overhead and angled to my taste, Separation light was provided by The sun and it yielded amazing results. Here are a few of the images. The Fun loving and playful nature of the couple came out in the photo’s they had no issues expressing themselves and it translated well in the...

On Assignment: Stella Maris Dance Ensemble 2012

Another Year, Another Privilege night to appreciate Art in the form of dance by the Talented Stella Maris Dance Ensemble. you may view a few images from last years show here . This year I had intended to go two nights. The first just to watch the show and the second just to shoot after noting highlights on the previous night.. however my schedule made that impossible so I had to make due with one night after work. Even without the knowledge of “where’s the money shot” I think I faired pretty well. I guess it may be experience from shooting it a couple years in a row because I pretty much went on auto pilot I found my self shooting in a similar fashion as i did last year. The only difference was the equipment. I worked with two cameras this time around a D300s equipped with a 50mm 1.8 and the D7000 with a 17-50mm 2.8 VC. The light was a bit difficult to deal with at times but god bless decent ISO capabilities of modern dslr’s and understanding exposure. Enjoy the Images, comment share like +1 and all that...
