Maternity & Glamor Shoot

This Saturday at the home studio I had my first maternity shoot Ever, and first in studio glamor shoot in a looooong time. The good thing is I think somewhere along the line of working as a photographer I’ve managed to kill the nervous vibe that comes before a shoot, Because there was absolutely non of that this time around. And while I’ve met the client before I don’t really know the client that well. So I’m kinda proud of the fact that the jitters are now gone.
The concept was simple, Some elegant and beautiful Maternity photos and mix some glamor in there, because which mom to be wouldn’t wanna look haawwt right? :) . We did just that. Here’s one of the glamor images done, hope you enjoy.

Difficulties faced:

  • The plan was to shoot tethered, was unable to do so because eos utility wouldn’t allow remote shooting with the 30d (turns out it was a windows 7 thing, so i had to update eos utility, didn’t do it in time for the shoot though so i shot hand held saving images to card only)
  • Usb cable wasn’t long enough :(
  • could have used some more space
  • It was soooo hot, we had 3 fans in the studio space as a result which took up space

Make up:
Done by Nickel Rhoden Haynes (twitter: @vampnixen)

Lighting:
I worked with a two light setup triggered via poverty wizards key light shot through a white shoot through brolly, kicker light was shot into a reflective brolly both hoisted on smith victor stands.

Conclusion:

  1. Overall a fun shoot
  2. Client was comfortable
  3. Showed in the photos
  4. She loves what she’s seen so far
  5. Everybody’s happy

Great going GT, mood lighting coming… The hot spots on the cheek, nose and lip a bit distracting. Maybe cut the power a bit to the mainlight, extend the distance between the flash and the umbrella, I can’t say what distance is the umbrella from the subject… Also you of all persons KNOW to create a decent rim light to lift the subject a bit more off the black background, more drama added …

yea, there’s alot of specular, flash distance from subject wasn’t that great. I could have tried extending the flash distance to umbrella.

The rim light i really couldn’t move it any further behind the subject (space limiter again). There may be a redux on this shoot, if the subject has the time this weekend, all being well my main light will be a wescott apollo softbox instead, want more even and controlled light.
